Astaxanthin (AST) as a potent oxy-carotenoid has multiple health benefits and biological activities. Current research show AST can protect central nervous system due to it’s anti-inflammatory, anti-apoptotic, and anti-oxidant properties, as well as the ability to promote nerve plasticity in neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s disease, Huntington’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, injuries resulting from trauma, inflammatory injuries and age-related dementia.
This review article will focus on the neuroprotective effects of AST for the treatment and prevention of neuronal diseases. The related mechanisms which present it as a promising neuroprotective agent for neurodegenerative diseases will be discussed.
