Abstract:   (10638 Views)
Background and Aim: To know a smoker’s readiness and motivation for quitting, the motivation test designed and introduced by the recommendation of the English National Health System in 1995. In this study which is the first of its kind in Iran, researchers were interested between the probable relations between the results of this test with success in quitting in the Iranian society so the best time to stop could be recommended to smokers. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study conducted between the years 2006 and 2008, and all attendants for smoking cessation during this period were included. The subjects were evaluated by a single physician and during a 4 session program on a weekly basis, appropriate individualized treatment recommendations including nicotine-containing drugs and others and behavioral therapies were made. Results: In this study, 822 subjects participated including 590 men (72%) with a mean age of 42.5±13 years. Motivation to quit test results were ranked as follows: 339 individuals (44.5%) in the low range (0-9), 378 (50%) in the moderate range (10-15) and 43 (5.5%) in the high range (16-20). 86% of the subjects with a high motivation score succeeded in quitting and this rate was 68% in those with a moderate ranked score and 69% for the low ranking individuals which was not considered statistically significant. Although at follow-up after the first 6 months, 80.5% in the high motivation group compared to 42% in the moderate and 46% in the low motivation group remained abstinent and this was statistically significant (p<0.0001). At follow-up at 12 months, 58% of the highly motivated subjects, 35% of moderately motivated subjects and 36% of those with low motivation remained smoking free and this was also statistically significant (p<0.05). Conclusion: It seems that the best time for starting quit smoking is when smoker is ready to quit with high score of motivational test, but with low score, it might be more focus on treatment.
