Background and Aim: Probiotics are beneficial organisms that have therapeutic effect within microbial flora. The aim of this research was to determine the antagonistic properties of Lactobacillus plantarum, fermentum and rhamnosus isolated from healthy baby stools on growth of Acinetobacterbaumannii and Pseudomonasaeruginosa of nosocomial origin.
Materials and Methods: In total 105 samples of nosocomial infection were collected and processed for bacterial isolation, identification and antimicrobial susceptibility testing, by means of standard biochemical tests and following standard bacteriological techniques disk diffusion method. The antagonistic effect of lactic acid bacteria carried out by Well method.
Results: From 105 isolates, 29 were identified as non-fermentative including 17 Acinetobacterbaumannii and 12 Pseudomonasaeruginosa respectively. Most of Acinetobacterbaumannii isolates showed high resistance to most tested antibiotics except ampicillin sulbactam. Pseudomonasaeruginosa isolates showed resistance to ampicillin sulbactum and gentamycin and sensitive to meropenem. The isolated lactobacilli such as Lactobacillusplantarum, fermentum and rhamnosus had substantial antagonistic effects against tested pathogenic bacteria causing nosocomial infections.
‍Conclusion: The results of this study showed that Lactobacillusplantarum, fermentum and rhamnosus had considerable effect on preventing the growth of fermentative and non-fermentative pathogenic bacteria.
