Validity and relaiblity of the early maladaptive schemas inventory in children, using factor analysis

| Background and Aim: Early maladaptive schemas (EMS) refer to deeply rooted negative beliefs about oneself, others, and the world that may develop during the earliest years of life. The present study aimed to translate and assess the validity and reliability of early maladaptive schemas inventory in children using factor analysis.
Materials and Methods: The present descriptive study used factor analysis and was performed on 600 middle-school students (300 boys, 300 girls) of Kermanshah State. The students were selected using multistage randomized cluster sampling. Early maladaptive schema inventory for children (SIC) consisting of 40 items was used in this study. The Data were analyzed by SPSS 18 software.
Results: Exploratory factor analysis and Oblimin rotation identified eleven factors related to the early maladaptive schemas inventory the results showed a high internal consistency for the whole scale and for eleven extracted factors. The Cronbach’s alpha for the total scale was 81% and split-half reliability was 72%.
Conclusion: Considering a reasonable validity and reliability of the early maladaptive schema inventory for children, this scale is an efficient tool for research and identifying early maladaptive schemas in children. |
